Identification of Rock Fluorescent Flakes

1. Principle of Thin Section Examination for Flourescence Characteristics

The polished fluorescent slices of rock are placed under the polarized fluorescence microscope. According to the different luminescence colors of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds in rocks excited by ultraviolet light, the petroliferous properties can be determined by fluorescence color, brightness and luminescence position. The fluorescent color reflects the characteristics of asphalt components, and the luminous brightness reflects the asphalt content.

2. Equipment

2.1 Polarizing fluorescence microscope, transmission polarizing system, reflection fluorescence system, uv excited color filter (wavelength 365nm).

2.2 Micrography (photography) system

2.3 Image analysis system of fluorescent flakes

3. Workflow

3.1 Naked eye observation of rock specimens, select suitable samples for fluorescence thin section identification

3.2 Preparation of fluorescent thin sections

3.3 Identification of rock and mineral types and reservoir space characteristics

3.4 Describe the fluorescence color, brightness and distribution in detail, and determine the hydrocarbon characteristics

4. Fluorescence Identification of Different Rock Types

4.1 Fluorescence identification of clastic rocks

For the identification of fluorescent color, luminance and characteristic description, see Appendix A. In the process of identification, attention should be paid to the description:

A) The relationship between the alteration of clastic particles and the oil content

B) The relationship between pore type, formation time and oil content

C) The relationship between the formation sequence, filling stages and evolution process of cements and their oil content

D) In addition to the description of bioluminescence characteristics of mudstone, attention should be paid to the fluorescence display of pores and fractures

4.2 Fluorescence identification of carbonate rocks

For the identification of fluorescence color, luminance and characteristic description, please refer to Appendix B. In the description of rock characteristics and fluorescence characteristics, please note:

A) Granule: describe the development, extension range, fluorescent color, color halo, brightness and position of the granule itself.

B) Cements: the relationship between the crystalline grain size of cements and the oil content, the relationship between cements and secondary pores, holes and fractures, and the display of oil content.

C) Fractures: Describe the genetic types and filling stages of fractures, the relationship between fractures and matrix, and the direction, range, color, color halo, brightness and luminous position of fluorescence display, with special attention to the fluorescence display of late fractures

D) Holes: The description is basically similar to cracks, and attention should be paid to the relationship between holes and cracks

4.3 Pyroclastic rock, igneous rock and metamorphic rock fluorescence identification

For the identification of fluorescent color, luminance and characteristic description, see Appendix C. In the process of identification, the fluorescent color, brightness, direction of impregnation and color halo of bituminous materials in holes, holes and fractures should be described in detail, and the relationship between bituminous materials and fillings and metasomatism in each stage should be described in detail.

5. Image Analysis of Fluorescent Thin Section

The fluorescent image information of the thin section is obtained by the camera device. The traditional color visual sense description of human is transformed into mathematical expression. The wavelength is determined according to the fluorescence color. According to the brightness component of the image, the luminance level is divided. The fluorescent colors of various asphalt components are classified to distinguish different components of asphalt, and the content and luminescent brightness of various asphalt components are calculated.
